Weird Wednesday - May 18, 2005

May 19th, 2005 by Laurie Barak

Yes, I know I was a day late. I kept thinking today was Wednesday but it is indeed Thursday. I received several emails from die-hard WW followers…sorry, everyone. Here is your kick for the week!

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time once again for …

WEIRD WEDNESDAY

Where I look up some weird auctions on eBay and share them with y’all for fun.

And on this lovely morning we start out with something a bit macabre.

  • 1800s coffin and medical human skeleton display

The skeleton has served very honorably for many years as an educational skeleton in New Hampshire. This human skeleton is real and has been lovingly taken care of and respected. We have been told that it is from the late 1800’s. The skeleton is fully articulated with old copper & brass hardware and can be hung for display (he once hung in a closet in a classroom).

His later years (the past 20) found him matched to a never used 1800s coffin with incredibly ornate handles and woodwork - the coffin is in fair condition, given its age, except for the top which has suffered from 20+ years of direct sunlight damage. The interior of the coffin has been ripped and purposely made to look “spooky” - it is a shame because it shows incredible craftsmanship. This was on display and has only now been rescued and made available for sale.

This skeleton would make a wonderful addition to any educational institution or even as a show stopping guest for your next Halloween party.

The skeleton isn’t in such bad shape for his age and the coffin is rather old-fashioned and spooky looking. I’m not sure where the seller came upon this item as there isn’t any information about it on the auction site. So far there are 14 bids and the price was over $100. Definitely a Weird Wednesday original.

  • Now on the just plain goofy side, it’s the Amazing Egg-Laying Chicken.

A rubber chicken much like the one used for comedy props, when you squeeze the chicken’s body a fake egg pops out.

A bit gross, but for $2.99 somebody would get a kick out of it. This blog does not recommend squeezing real chickens. You might get more than just an egg. And a trip to the hospital.

  • “What you are about to see may change your life forever,” writes the seller of the Antique Bubble Gum Tester.

So far my life hasn’t changed forever. After reading the very long auction listing I did find this really isn’t a serious auction - at least I didn’t take it seriously. I’m really not sure what the point is, though the Seller is quite sentimental about his or her gum, even writing a poem to his or her beloved chewing vice. I think it’s a bit more like modern art - you either get it or you don’t.

  • Heading back to the somewhat gross side, a woman is auctioning off cutting her fingernails for your bid.

“People have always been fascinated with my nails,” the Seller writes. “With your bid I will cut my two longest nails and send them to you or if you want I will cut off all of my nails.”

Now this is just gross. However, there are bids and the Seller will soon be mailing off her cut cuticles.

In the questions from other members section there’s a comment reading, “BUYWEIRD DOT KOM is privileged to be the second bidder.” After checking out buyweird.com I can see why. BuyWeird, “the weird and bizarre on eBay“, has many lists of weird items even weirder than I’ve ever seen. I must caution there are some mature items on this site, so please use caution when viewing.

  • Let’s get back to the somewhat weird but cute side of things. You can now get a big head doll of yourself or your favorite person at this auction.

Using polymer clay, the Seller will sculpt the face into a fun, cartoon-like head and stick it on a doll. The heads are hand-sculpted and the dolls are about 4 inches tall. Cute idea for a wedding cake topper if you send in a photo of the bride and groom. There are many cute samples on the Seller’s page. Bidding starts at $59.99 but it’s well worth this adorable and unique gift.

  • That’s your Weird Wednesday report for May 18, 2005.
