Weird Wednesday Gets Wicked – May 25,2005

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, it’s time once again for …

WEIRD WEDNESDAY

Where I look up some weird auctions on eBay and share them with y’all for fun.

This Wednesday, I’m feeling a little wicked, so here’s some things I found in the “Goth” category.

Please bear in mind this is just for fun; no offense to anyone who doesn’t believe in such items. Though I’m feeling “wicked” I’ve kept it as tame as possible ;-)

eBay Seller joekido offers a really cool skull flame belt buckle starting at $7.99.

This highly chromed buckle has what looks like rivets around the border, with a skull and flames shooting out of the cross bones in the center and what looks like a V-twin engine behind it. There is what looks like an Iron Cross behind it. This is all reliefed and it is black on the inside to help the flames and skull stand out.

This would be a great gift for the motorcycle enthusiast. The buckle fits up to a 1 1/2″ belt and is 3 3/4″ by 2 7/8″. The auction officially ends on May 31st but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone uses the BuyItNow function and snaps up this great buckle for $9.99.

While they’ve gotten a bit of a bad rap for being ugly, this little resin gargoyle is actually kind of cute. At 4″ tall he has a 12″ wing span and brown glass or acrylic eyes.

There is an interesting history behind gargoyles. Here’s a little bit from the British Gargoyle Etymology and History web site:

  • They stand guard and ward off unwanted spirits and other creatures.
  • If they’re hideous and frightening they can scare off all sorts of things.
  • They come alive at night when everyone’s asleep so they can protect you when you’re vulnerable.
  • Better still, the ones with wings can fly round the whole area and cover the village or town as well as the church.
  • They return to their places when the sun comes up.
  • While some gargoyles on old churches and buildings in Europe are quite ugly and scary-looking, I can’t help but think about the cute gargoyles from the Walt Disney movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame. With actor Jason Alexander as one of the funny gargoyles who befriends Quasimodo, who could be afraid? This little gray fella would be cute on a bookshelf, fireplace mantle or on top of your computer monitor to scare off any email viruses.

On the subject of gargoyles, here’s a neat-looking lion’s head gargoyle wall plaque. “This gargoyle is cast in hydrocal (a fine casting cement) and measures approximately 5.5″ tall x 5″ wide with a stone finish,” indicates the Seller. While he looks a bit stern, he also looks a bit amused and wise at the same time. This would be a great addition to an outdoor garden wall.

Here’s a bit of a simple one – a glow in the dark dragon. He looks like one of the dragons you see on many Chinese works of art, with a long long snout and one claw holding a “crystal” ball. He appears to be made of plastic and is 7 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ high. Being a dragon lover I think he’s adorable and would make a fun addition to anyone’s collection.

Last but not least, on the much milder side, there are some deliciously wicked soy bean votive candles. These magnificent votive’s are hand poured in small batches for optimum freshness.

  • These candles are made from soy wax which is derived from the processing of soybeans.
  • Soy wax burns clean, unlike traditional petroleum based candles.
  • Soy wax is biodegradable and spills can easily be cleaned with soap and water.
  • Soybean wax is safe, non-toxic and a cool wax.
  • Soybean wax is a slow burning wax and in most cases you get up to 6 times more hours out your candles.
  • Soybean candles are safe for vegans.
  • Having had some soy-based candles myself I can tell you, they are wonderful. They smell great, last longer than beeswax or other types of wax candles and when blown out, the wax isn’t hot so it is safe around children and pets.

Please note the Seller of this auction is in Australia, so while the auction bidding starts at a little lower than Australian dollars, the shipping would be higher to send it to the US.

That’s your wickedly Weird Wednesday report for May 25, 2005.
