There are always auctions on eBay auction that support good causes, like childrens’ outreach programs.
But this one was a little different. It was an auction for a 12-foot clam weighing in at 700 pounds.
Before you get out the lemon juice, the clam isn’t a real, living clam – it is a wood, mesh and foam-covered sculpture once used on a trailer advertising Ivar’s seafood restaurant in Seattle, Washington. “I just found out that the clam was originally created as part of a local, comical TV commercial for Ivars that included dancing cavemen,” wrote the Seller.
The Ivars clam once traveled Washington state, advertising the restaurant at such local fairs as “Bite of Seattle” and “Taste of Tacoma”. The word IVARS is painted on the clam with lots of dangling reflectors attached that sparkle in the light. “It was transported here on a one-ton flatbed truck with steel sides. It had been loaded with a forklift and we carefully rolled it off with a lift gate,” writes the Seller.
The auction ended on July 21st with a winning bid of $1,626.00. Amazingly there were over 70 bids for the giant crustacean that started out at $1.00. 20% of the proceeds were given to a childrens’ program that sponsors weekly youth programs and community service events for underpriveleged neighborhoods.
