Whether for charity events or a product launch, companies are making eBay the marketplace for marketers. They see the shopping site as a place to build buzz for their brands.

Getting some pop on eBay:

Coca-Cola Zero. Coke rolled out its no-calorie soft drink in March with help from an eBay auction of a set of six 8-ounce custom Coke Zero bottles and Zero-inspired jewelry designed by Chris Aire.

Oprah. The talk-show diva has used eBay for charity fundraising since 2003, starting with a set of chairs and some of her clothes, including a Chanel sweater and ski outfits. The items raised $83,500.

I, Robot. Last summer 20th Century Fox helped promote the theatrical release of the Will Smith hit with sale of movie merchandise and props on eBay. An autographed Will Smith leather jacket fetched $4,600.

Wendy’s is the latest to turn to eBay. The company put a prop from its Monterey Ranch Chicken TV ads up for auction after hundreds of calls about whether “ranch tooth” products were for sale. The Ranch Tooth character is a 19-inch, seven-pound molar wearing a cowboy hat. In the ad, he yells, “Raaaanch!” as a young man talks about the sandwich. The “ranch tooth,” similar to a “sweet tooth,” signals a craving for the sandwich that includes Monterey Jack cheese, tomato, lettuce and bacon ranch sauce.
