Better act fast if you want to bid on a signed, framed portrait of a Doonesbury character on eBay.
To celebrate the 35th birthday of the Doonesbury comic strip, creator Garry Trudeau has allowed his publisher to auction off eight signed, full-color prints on eBay and donate the proceeds to Fisher House,a nonprofit “home away from home” that offers housing to the relatives of soldiers who are being treated at military and VA medical centers.
B.D. , the Doonesbury character who deployed to Iraq and lost a leg, spent time at Fisher House while recovering. Trudeau’s compilation book of the strips chronicling B.D.’s recovery, The Long Road Home: One Step at a Time, also raised money for Fisher House. These comfort homes near major military and VA medical facilities are familiar to many families who have stayed in them to be near a service member or veteran during their recuperation.
“Through Vietnam, the Gulf War and now Iraq, Garry has been using Doonesburyfor three decades to get across the age-old truth about war: It’s the young people who make the greatest sacrifices,” said John McMeel, co-founder of the parent company of Universal Press Syndicate, which distributes the Doonesbury strip.
Portraits of other Doonesbury characters are also available for fans. These include:
But if you want one – bid quickly; the auction ends November 19th.
