Taking Pictures

July 11th, 2007 by Lynn Little

Pictures are a great selling point for an eBay auction. Photos of an item can really enhance the number of bidders and interest in auctions. Here are some things to keep in mind when taking pictures to use on eBay.

Lighting is very important especially when using digital cameras. Sometimes it can be hard to capture the actual color of an item under artificial light. You may have to take your item outdoors to see if you get better results. On some items the color of the item is very important to potential bidders. Some pottery pieces of a certain color are more collectible than others.  If you just can’t capture the right color, then make sure to list what color the piece is suppose to be.

Focus. Please no blurry shots. If you have trouble snapping clear photos, invest in a tripod. A table top tripod retails for less than $10 and using one can ensure a clear photo every time.

Detailed Photos. If a piece is flawed, take a close up picture so that potential buyers will know exactly what is wrong with a not mint item. It’s very important to make sure that details of a flawed piece are noticeable in photos.

Uncluttered background just makes for a nicer photo. Just having the eBay item in frame will not distract from the auctioned piece. Keep backgrounds one color like a bed spread or piece of cloth. If you have the space, set up a spot to take eBay photos. Investing in one of those cardboard displays (usually sold for kids science fairs) would be ideal since it has a clean background and can be set up anywhere. It will help to make sure that the only item in the photo is the on up for auction.

A great picture for your eBay auction will generate more interest in the item. Clean up items and take clear photos to ensure a great start for your auction.
