Selling Items on eBay

July 24th, 2007 by Lynn Little

I hear so many people talk about wanting to make extra money through eBay but just haven’t gotten around to trying it out. Selling those unneeded items can not only generate you some extra money but help to declutter your home. It’s a win-win situation, so why do people procrastinate to become an eBay seller?

Selling on eBay does take some effort. The more organized your are before sitting down to create your listing, the easier the process will be. First decide what you want to try to sell. Conduct a couple of searches on eBay to get an idea if people are buying this item. If you find that most listings do not have a bid, then you might want to wait on selling that item. You can always take the chance to try to sell it anyway. I have seen some items not have a bid and then list my item which will then sell.

Once you’ve done some research, take pictures of your items. You can upload one picture to eBay’s hosting for free. To use their service after that one picture per auction will cost money. Create a free account on one of the money photo hosting sites and you will be able to show as many pictures as you want free.

Write your description before sitting down to do the listing. Make note of any imperfections, so you can describe the item in as much detail as is needed. Find you a shipping box and place the item in it along with some packing material. Then weigh the box to get a general idea of the weight of the package to ship. You can have shipping figured at the end of the auction automatically but you will need an accurate weight of the package. You can also do a flat shipping and handling cost but beware to not overcharge too much since eBay has been cracking down on inflated shipping charges.

Preparing to list the item is 90% of the work. Listing the item is fairly simple and will take about 5 minutes. It’s an easy form to fill out. If you’ve taken care of the above tasks, then it should be no problem to have your auction listed and taking bids within 10 minutes.
